Speak Up Saturday Book Review + GIVEAWAY!–The Last Plea Bargain

Speak Up Saturday
The Last Plea Bargain
From the publisher:
Plea bargains may grease the rails of justice, but for Jamie Brock, prosecuting criminals is not about cutting deals. In her three years as assistant DA, she’s never plea-bargained a case and vows she never will. But when a powerful defense attorney is indicted for murder and devises a way to bring the entire justice system to a screeching halt, Jamie finds herself at a crossroads. One by one, prisoners begin rejecting deals. Prosecutors are overwhelmed, and felons start walking free on technicalities. To break the logjam and convict her nemesis, Jamie must violate every principle that has guided her young career. But she has little choice. To convict the devil, sometimes you have to cut a deal with one of his demons.
I have to be honest. This is the first legal drama/thriller that I’ve ever read. It might be a new favorite genre. That is, as long as they flow like this one.
I really enjoyed this book. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it. I tried reading another book of similar genre by another author, but that was over ten years ago, and it wasn’t nearly as engaging as this one.
The book flipped between first person narrative from the main character to third person for the supporting characters. Each character had a depth to them that I enjoyed. There were not too many characters either, so following each one was easy.
The plot was complex, yet not too complicated that I couldn’t easily follow it which is good because my reading time is now generally while I’m nursing the baby and referring the other two kids. This book had me staying up way too late though once I got into it. I think I read the last half in two days, much to the irritation of my husband who was trying to converse with me.
If you have read any other book reviews from me, you know that it’s the ending that will make or break a book for me. I can really enjoy the rest of it, but if I don’t like the ending, I will not read it again or recommend it to others. The ending of this one was great. It managed to surprise me, it was exciting, and it was thorough with all the ends being all tied up.
So, I would definitely recommend this book and I look forward to reading more of his books in the future!

Review and Giveaway–Little Leaf Diapers Travel Wetbag

Speak Up Saturday
It’s Speak Up Saturday! Time for a review and a giveaway!!
image
An acquaintance of mine through church makes and sells these nifty diapers along with burp cloths and wet bags.
image
imageimageimage
Here’s a bit about the company and the diapers:
At Little Leaf Diapers we love children, so we want to help you find ways to save money and time so that you are free to invest more time in your   kids. Our motto is: “Revolutionizing Cloth Diapering”, and that is exactly what we have strives to do. Our cloth diapers are revolutionary not only because they will save time, money, and our environment; but they have some great features that are not out on the market in other stores. Not only will  this diaper adjust to go from infancy to potty training, but it also allows you to reuse the shell over before laundering which means that you will not need to buy as many diapers as other brands recommend. Our cloth diapers also come with adjustable elastic that will allow you to get the best fit around the legs and lower back, plus it can be replaced down the road if it stretches out with repeated use over the life of  several children.
While I have not had the opportunity to try the diapers, I was given a wet bag to review. I would love to get the diapers too, maybe someone can get me some for Roo (hint, hint). ;)
The wet bag I received is excellent, I love it! It features a drawstring closure, a snap pocket on the outside for wipes, and a waterproof lining.
image
The pocket on the outside will hold either a travel pack of wipes, like the kind you can get at Target, or even one of those small travel cases for wipes. You could also store an extra paci in the pocket (like I have) or just about anything else.
The bag is easy to launder as well, I just wash it with my diapers when it gets too stinky.
Because I don’t really need to carry a whole big diaper bag when I go out these days, I really love the size and features of this wet bag. I stick a clean diaper inside when I go out, and then I just have to carry the wet bag and nothing else, perfect!
To be honest, I really can’t think of anything else that I would improve. The size is great, the features are good for their purpose, and the pocket on the outside is genius!

Wait! Did I say giveaway?
I love my wet bag so much, I thought one of you needed one too!

Review & Giveaway–Prefense Hand Sanitizer

image
Generally, I’m not a fan of hand sanitizers. I think they kill off too many of the good germs along with the bad ones. HOWEVER, I have kids and we go places and it’s fall which means there’s lots of sickness going around. And with Nate still in diapers, I’m not always at a place where I can wash my hands right away.
Enter Prefense.
Prefense provides safe, all natural, alcohol free all-day antibacterial protection from germs for 24 hours or up to 10 hand washings.
Prefense is Non-Toxic and Safe For Kids!
Contains soothing botanicals that softens your hands to prevent drying, redness and chapping.
For everyday protection, whether at work or play, Prefense will safeguard you and your family against today’s superbugs.
Because our "one spray lasts all day", our hand sanitizer only costs about $.08 per day, compared to $1.20 per day with traditional hand sanitizers.
I really like this product. The kids like it too. It foams as it sprays out instead of that drippy, slidy goo that is common with “regular” hand sanitizers. The pump dispenses just the right amount. After you get it rubbed in, it isn’t sticky and doesn’t smell. I like the size that I received as well, perfect for my purse or diaper bag. And at only $6.99, it’s very reasonably priced.
You can find Prefense on Facebook and Twitter. You can purchase Prefense Hand Sanitizer and Wipes either at their website or on Amazon (especially if you are part of the Amazon Mom program and get free shipping!)
Prefense gets 5 stars from me, it’s an excellent product!

And now for the giveaway…
Prefense has an 8oz bottle of their hand sanitizer for one of you! That’s 640 applications in one bottle!

Product Review – Melissa & Doug Magnetic Calendar & *$50 GIVEAWAY*

CSN Stores has over 200 online stores where you can find everything from dinnerware to camera accessories to educational resources and toys!
I have had the opportunity to review several products for them, so this is the first of the items that I received.
They have also graciously offered to host a giveaway for a $50 gift certificate to ANYTHING they carry! It seems like there’s a little bit of everything there, so I’m sure you can find something you would love.
I got this Melissa & Doug Magnetic Calendar to use with Kahlen, she loves it! It’s been really helpful to give her a basic understanding of calendars, such as what day is today, what month is it, how long it is until something happens, and so much more! I like all the tiles that came with it and I think that if I really wanted to change some of them it would be easy with a bit of Mod Podge and clip art.
Here’s Kahlen setting it up right after we got it:
2010-05-07 Melissa & Doug Calendar (1)
I hung it on the wall near our new school area, so we look at it and talk about it when we do school. Unfortunately, it’s in the basement, so July we didn’t do much with it.
2010-06-04 Zoo Animals Week 1 Day 1 (3)Our favorite part is the weather tiles. There’s sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, and snowy. We both enjoy this part because then there’s something to do everyday.
I think when we start school again in September, this will be extremely useful and I’m very grateful to CSN for providing the opportunity to review such a great product
Products reviewed were provided to me free of charge. No compensation was given in exchange for this review. My opinion is my own and is an honest view of my experience with the product.
Win it!
You can win this or a plethora of other products of your choice from CSN Stores. Giveaway is for a $50 Gift Certificate and will be emailed to you after the giveaway is closed.
(and yes my friends and family can enter . . . I will use www.random.org to pick the winner . . . and you aren't friends with Mr. Random.  No one is.)
Mandatory: Follow my blog publicly via Google Friend Connect and leave me a comment about anything :) Maybe something that you would get with your gift certificate from CSN Stores or another useful school tool that you’ll be using this year.

Book Review & Giveaway – Venom and Song By Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper

I had the opportunity to review Venom and Song by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper. This is the second book in the Berinfell Prophecies series.

Venom and Song

{From the publisher:

Now in the strange realm of Allyra, the Seven young lords confront a traitor in their midst, a creature-infested forest, teenage fears and doubts, inexplicable mysteries . . . and the Spider King himself.

In a rigorous training program that makes boot camp look like Disneyland, the Seven must quickly learn to harness their own powers, work as one, and elude the Spider King's spies. But as the ancient Berinfell Prophecies are revealed, the Seven soon discover their training might not be enough. To stop the Spider King they must also unravel the secrets of the Rainsong, travel to a creepy, trap-infested fortress to find the legendary keystone, and lead the Berinfell Elves in an attack on the Spider King's own turf. An epic adventure with powerful messages about true strength, forgiveness, and working together as one body that will grab the attention of intermediate readers.

Learn more about The Berinfell Prophecies at www.heedtheprophecies.com.}

When I got this book in the mail, I simply couldn’t start in the middle, so I actually got the first book in the series, Curse of the Spider King, from the library and read that first.

The series is young adult fiction, and reads like it. The story is engaging and fun. It was a little challenging to keep up with all the characters at first, but as the story went along and each character developed more, it became easier. I have read a ton of fiction similar to this that was not “Christian”, so I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of this series. It is still fantasy, but God and his Word are central to the beliefs of the elven race in the books. The writing is not as tight as I have read with some other books, but still very enjoyable, especially for the target audience of young adults. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, this series, and am looking forward to another book in the series.

Win it!

Book Review & Giveaway - The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews

From the publisher:
A unique blend of historical fact and engaging fiction showing the power of forgiveness.
In 1942, German subs are dispatched to the Gulf of Mexico to sink U.S. vessels carrying goods and fuel. While taking a late-night walk, Helen Mason—widowed by war—discovers the near-lifeless body of a German sailor. Enraged at the site of Josef Landermann's uniform, Helen is prepared to leave him to die when an unusual phrase, faintly uttered, changes her mind.
In The Heart Mender, a small town must prepare itself for the worst the world has to offer, and Josef and Helen must reconcile their pasts to create a future.

I read this book as part of the Book Sneeze program through Thomas Nelson Publishing. It was a lovely piece of fiction. Very easy to read and easy to get sucked into the story.

The blend of fiction and true story was unique and engaging. The story kept me engaged through its 240 pages (which to me is a short book :) ). I felt that there was room for more development on the concept of forgiveness, which is the book's main message, but overall the story was a good one. The character development was good. The story moved at a good pace and provided a decent level of detail. I enjoyed this book and would definitely read it again.

Now for the giveaway! Thomas Nelson Publishing graciously sent me two copies of this book so that I could share one with you!
