Wordless Wednesday–Pumpkin Patch–October 19th

Wow, has it been two weeks already?!? Where does the time go?

Anyway, two weeks ago, a friend and I had the privilege of going to Women of Faith Over The Top conference at the Pepsi Center in Denver, thanks to BookSneeze and Thomas Nelson Publishing. It was my first time, and I really enjoyed it!

We got to hear from so many different people in such a short time! Starting on Friday, we heard from Patsy Clairmont and Andy Andrews, then we snuck in a quick trip to Ikea and had Swedish meatballs for dinner before the evening session and Andy Andrews again, Brenda Warner, and ending with a concert from Mandisa. We made it to our hotel at 11, slept quick, and checked out by 7:45 to make it back for the first session on Saturday (after stopping for coffee and yummy breakfast sandwiches from Panera, of course). We heard from Lisa Whelchel, Patsy Clairmont, Karen Kingsbury, Sandi Patty, and Marilyn Meberg. Not to mention a concert from Amy Grant and great worship and drama from the Women of Faith team.

There was also several presentations from World Vision about sponsoring a child; man, I’m glad we already do, because I would have walked out of there sponsoring one if we didn’t! (And that wouldn’t be a bad thing…)

Overall, I left feeling very encouraged. There were a ton of stories told, each with a different point to apply to my life. I was very glad that Patsy Clairmont did a recap at the very end, because I don’t know that I would have remembered anything.

The only part that I was disappointed with was the talks by Andy Andrews. I’ve reviewed two of his books through BookSneeze, and was not really impressed with either of them. I get a better idea why now; it really seemed like he was preaching prosperity gospel, which I do not agree with. at. all. He left out the most important parts of our story, God, and focused on effort and works and the blessings that God can provide. That said, though, everyone else told great stories of what God had truly done for them during hard times and good ones. I especially enjoyed the stories from Brenda Warner and Lisa Whelchel. Both of them are excellent speakers, and I think I’m going to get my hands on Lisa’s new book, Friendship for Grownups.

Would I go again? Probably. Because my church offers conferences every year, it’s a bit hard for me to justify the cost. I did definitely enjoy it, I just really have to think and pray about it before committing my time and resources, especially since next year at this time, I’ll have a 6 month old baby!

First Stitches

It’s happened. One of my children had to get stitches. Of my kids, though, I’m glad it was Kahlen. I think she handled it better than I did. Of course, I can see them and she can’t, but I don’t think it would have mattered much if she could have watched the entire process.

So, here’s how it went down…

We were at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a school field trip. We just finished studying ancient Egypt and they have a mummy exhibit, so we thought that would be perfect. AND we’re starting on Creation next, so we wanted to go see Prehistoric Journey, the dinosaur exhibit too.

Anyway, we were playing outside, getting ready to go home. They have four or so wolf sculptures surrounded by rocks that the kids love to play on. That’s what they’re there for, and it’s usually a good thing to get them super worn out before the drive home. They had been playing outside for about 10 minutes or so, jumping from rock to rock, etc, etc. K was trying to jump from one rock to another while reaching for one of the sculptures. She missed. Fell from the rock, onto her back, and cracked her head. I was soooo glad my mom was there because, honestly, I’m just not up to picking my 42-pound daughter up off the rock and carrying her these days.

We left immediately. We had one ice pack in the car and stopped at McDonalds for ice and the gas station for ibuprofen. Buela sat in the back with her and helped her keep her ice on her head. I wasn’t really thinking we would need to take her in because it was just a bad bonk, right? Well, once we got about halfway home, the swelling was down enough to get a good look, and it was a nice sized, ragged edged gash on her scalp.

I called the doctor’s office and they were able to see us as soon as we could get back to Fort Collins. I can’t believe how well she did. All through the cleaning, exam, numbing, and stitching, she hardly made a peep. She didn’t seem distressed, or shy, or overwhelmed, she just really seemed to think it was no big deal. And, hey, they gave her a cool dinosaur bouncy ball when she was done. The doc said she can come back anytime for stitches because she did better than a lot of their adult patients.

Sorry if this grosses you out, but I had to take a picture so she could see since they are on the back of her head, so now you get to see too. See? Just two little stitches.

Wordless Wednesday–Dance Class–October 12th

Kahlen just finished taking a three-week Dancin’ Dumplins class through parks & rec. She enjoyed it, and we’ll probably do another set after we finish this round of swimming classes :)

Book Review–Thank You, God, For Blessing Me by Max Lucado

The illustrations were detailed and descriptive. The words were simple enough but not overly simplified. I liked the prayer and the pattern that it had, a good pattern to teach our children: to be thankful for all we have and can do, for all God has made for us, and asking for help to be thankful and obey.

The only thing I wish is that it was longer! I guess I’ll have to wait for another “Little Hermie” book…

Book Review– How To Be God’s Little Princess by Sheila Walsh

What does it take to be a princess? Sheila Walsh has some important answers to share for every little girl. This trendy design features black & white line art and a two-color pink and black interior. The art will tie to each how-to topic in the book—how to make the best pink cookies, how to wear a tiara, how to earn money at home, how to care for a royal dog, how to be respectful, how to use good manners, how to help Mom, how to follow Jesus, how to act like a princess when things go terribly wrong, and many more.

When I saw this book available for review, I thought it sounded fun, especially since I was definitely not princess-like growing up. I would have much rather been up a tree than having a tea party.

What I like:

• The topics covered are very appropriate and provide a good amount of information without being overwhelming.
• The book is peppered with quizzes and other activities to make it more interactive and fun for the readers.
• Ms. Walsh uses scripture to reinforce her points. I think this would be easy to leave out and just present the practicals, so I appreciated that she included many verses.

What I didn’t like:

There’s only one thing, really. I would say the reading level is definitely appropriate for a 9-12 year old, but if my daughter does not know much of this information by the time she’s 9, then I have not done a very good job training her in the way she should go. Most of the information in the book is appropriate for a 5-7 year old, but not the reading level. I think in a year or so, Kahlen and I will enjoy going through this book together.

Overall, I give this book four stars. I was encouraged by it to start teaching Kahlen more of the manners and etiquette presented in it, and look forward to read it with her.
